FAQs
Q: Is this a birth class?
A: No. This is information that isn’t covered in 99% of birth classes. I love teaching childbirth education, and I think EVERYONE should take a class. But sometimes when I teach, we get to the end of the class and a student (always Black) will still have a nagging question- “If anything goes wrong, what are the doctors going to do to keep me safe?” Expecting Excellence answers that question so you can USE the information in your birth class without fear.Q: I’m busy & near the end of my pregnancy. How long will this take?
A: The videos are all less than 30 minutes, and each information guide is designed to be consumed quickly. I don’t want you to drag this out any longer, or keep pushing it down your to-do list. And this is action that needs to be taken quickly! This class is designed to help you have conversations, and get your team and plan in place fast, so you can let go of this worry.Q: How long do I have access to this?
A: You have 1 year of access, so that you can use it from the start of your pregnancy through postpartum.
Q: Will this benefit me if I have a high-risk pregnancy?
A: Yes! Some of the conditions that make pregnancies high risk are explicitly covered in Expecting Excellence. And the tools that I recommend for talking to doctors can apply to your Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist, OBGYN or any other doctor.
Q: I just want to trust my doctor. They should be the ones to take care of my safety. This is a bit much.
A: Yes. They should. And it is. Here’s the thing though- you're here because you're worried, and your doctor may not have the time or tools to calm those fears. Plus, many of us don’t know which doctor will be in the room, and you won’t know who your L&D nurses are until you get there. I’m going to help you learn how they think, what their procedures are, and how to get them on your team.Q: Is there really anything I can do? If it can happen to Serena and Beyonce, then I don’t stand a chance.
A: Serena and Beyonce have money and power, but at the end of the day what they needed most was good care. You can get that, and that’s what Expecting Excellence will help you do. I refuse to give up on the possibility of Black mothers giving birth without fear.Q: Is this going to tell me to switch to a homebirth?
A: No. Homebirth is a completely different conversation. If you’re high risk and need the hospital, you should have access to all the tools to keep you safe. And if giving birth at home is going to freak you out, that’s NOT a positive birth experience. This is about working with the hospital system, to feel safer within it.
Q: Is this just for Black women?
A: The information is specifically geared to Black women giving birth in the hospital, who are afraid after learning about the maternal health crisis in America. That said, I think better self-advocacy and knowing more about what to expect can help every pregnant person. Anyone is welcome to buy the class. If it’s not for you, tell a pregnant Black friend!
Q: This sounds too good to be true. How is it only $35?
A: This information is so important that I want to make sure it gets in more people’s hands. And between co-pays, birth classes, lactation consultants, carseats and saving for maternity leave, I know pregnancy is expensive. I want this to be an EASY YES, so you can move beyond these fears and get excited about your pregnancy. (For the record, while I'll never charge the full value for this, this an introductory discount, so get after it!)
Q: You mention partners, can I use this as a single mom?
A: Yes! The partner I mention isn’t necessarily a romantic partner/husband/wife/co-parent. In fact, they aren’t always the best choice! As a single mother, you’ll need to prepare your village and choosing and working with your birth partner is a great start. This program helps you do that.Q: I already have a doula. Will this benefit me?
A: I truly believe so. Doulas are amazing (of course, I’m biased). And having a doula is a great step- you’ll have someone familiar with the birth process who can look out for you. But I encourage all of my clients to speak up for themselves, and trust themselves and their (birth) partner too. This will give you vital information for times when your doula is not with you, like at an OB appointment. And you can talk to your doula about what you learn!
